As the year comes to a close, I'd like to share another side of my work - environmental education and awareness in LA. In particular I am a founding board member of the Nature Nexus Institute, which has for 15 years been running community and place-based programs getting kids from K-12 all the way to community college out into our natural environment. We strongly believe nature awareness and access is just as much an environmental justice issue as environmental hazards, and work hard to ensure all communities have access. We also believe that place-based environmental stewardship, in additional to learning science and ecology, also requires experiential learning, artistic expression, community engagement, and storytelling. Nature Nexus Institute, of which I am a board member and the education off-shoot of LA Audubon, is part of a growing group of non-profit and community-based science education organizations who have come together to form the LA STEM Collective. The STEM Collective serves as the hub of the Los Angeles regional STEM Ecosystem, providing free programming and equitable access to nature for thousands of children.
