Equipment Needed to Make Oat Waffles

This is a pretty foolproof recipe, and it only takes a few minutes to prep! First of all, get your oats ready. I used sprouted rolled oats for this recipe, as the rolled oats worked better than instant oatmeal. There is no need to separate the wet ingredients and dry ingredients, the waffle batter can be mixed all together in a large bowl.

You’ll also need your waffle maker out! I used a Belgian waffle maker for deep delicious pockets in my waffles. The waffle maker got these waffles super crisp on the outside and warm and chewy in the middle.

If you don’t have a waffle maker, you can use this batter to make pancakes! A reader commented they do this all the time, and the pancakes turn out great.

How to Make This Oat Flour Waffle Recipe

  1. Make the Oat Flour: add the rolled oats directly into a high-speed blender or food processor. Blend or process for 2 minutes until the oats have transformed into a fine flour.

FAQs

Which flour is best for waffles? ›

Key Ingredients

Flour: I use all-purpose flour in this recipe. It keeps the waffles light on their feet.

What is the secret to good waffles? ›

Add cornstarch.

If you're making waffles with baking powder and baking soda, adding cornstarch to the mix will get you waffles that are crisp on the outside and soft and flaky on the inside. Because waffle recipes vary, start with ¼ cup and work in as much as ½ cup to get the desired effect.

What happens if you use milk instead of water in waffle mix? ›

Instead of water, you can use whole milk to make your waffles extra rich. Typically, for one batch of waffles, you'll need 1 cup of water for every 1 cup of classic pancake mix. A couple of large brown eggs will also help your waffles have the perfect fluffy interior.

Why are my homemade waffles not crispy? ›

Not waiting until the iron heats up properly means your waffles will cook, but never achieve that satisfyingly crisp exterior. Overworking the batter will leave your waffles dense and chewy instead of light and airy. And stacking even the most perfect waffles will cause them to become soggy and limp in minutes.

What makes waffles taste better? ›

Any tips on how to make waffles from mix taste better?
  1. Use clarified butter to cook them.
  2. Add orange zest.
  3. Add some cardamom.
  4. Try almond extract in place of vanilla.

What oil is best for waffles? ›

Oil: A neutral oil, such as vegetable oil, ensures the waffles are nice and moist. Sugar: A tablespoon of white sugar adds the perfect amount of sweetness. Baking powder: Baking powder acts as a leavener, which means it contributes to the waffles' light and fluffy texture.

Should you let waffle batter rest? ›

Recommended overnight or 2 hr resting – for the tastiest waffles, rest the batter overnight in the fridge or for at least 2 hours. This makes the flour grains absorb the liquid so it makes the inside of the waffles softer.

What can I add to waffle mix to make them better? ›

  1. Bacon! ...
  2. A handful of blueberries or other small or sliced berries.
  3. Miniature chocolate chips. ...
  4. Miniature cinnamon chips. ...
  5. Peanut butter (about 1/4 cup peanut butter for every cup of flour). ...
  6. 1/2 cup cocoa with 1/3 cup sugar.
  7. 1 cup crushed pineapples (drained well); top finished waffles with whipped cream and coconut flakes.

How do you keep homemade waffles crispy? ›

Here are some other ways to keep the sogginess at bay:
  1. Place your waffles on a cooling rack in a low-heat oven (don't stack the waffles on top of each other).
  2. Throw your waffles in a toaster to refresh their crispiness.
  3. Make sure your waffle iron is very hot.

Why add egg to waffle mix? ›

By whipping extra air into the egg whites, you can create a light and delicate foam that carries that air into the waffle batter. When the batter is light and airy, so are the waffles.

Why do you put oil in waffle mix but not in pancake mix? ›

Waffle batters contain a higher proportion of fat than pancake or crêpe batters, as the extra fat helps to keep the waffles soft. Nigella's recipe uses 125ml (1/2 cup) of vegetable oil. Generally you can switch oil for melted butter in a waffle recipe.

What is the difference between a Belgian waffle and a regular waffle? ›

Belgian waffles are usually thicker than their American counterparts. These Belgian beauties are made with a recipe that includes yeasted batter and crunchy pearl sugar. Belgian waffles have extra-deep pockets—the better for filling with butter, jam, maple syrup, or whipped cream.

Can you over mix waffle batter? ›

Whisk until the batter is combined, but not too heavily. A few lumps are fine. If you over-mix the waffles, you could end up with chewy, hard waffles from drawing all of the gluten out of the flour.

Can I use butter instead of oil for waffles? ›

When you compare the two, one of the best ways to get the waffles to crisp up perfectly with a golden crust is to use oil instead of butter. Though butter tastes better, and you can always smear some on top to add flavor, oil will give you the best texture.

Why are my waffles not light and fluffy? ›

Why are my waffles not fluffy? Classic waffle batter is leavened both chemically (using baking powder or soda) and mechanically (with beaten egg whites folded in). To make fluffy waffles, be sure the egg whites are beaten to perfectly stiff peaks.

Can I use bread flour instead of all-purpose for waffles? ›

Just substitute it cup for cup for the all-purpose flour the recipe calls for. Bread flour is made from a harder wheat and has higher protein. That forms a sturdier dough that lets bread rise higher. But, while it would change the texture in cakes, there will be no difference in waffles.

Is waffle batter same as pancake batter? ›

What's the Difference Between the Batters? Both waffle and pancake recipes share some of the same basic ingredients, like eggs, milk and flour, but their batters are not the same. Waffles usually contain more fat and sometimes more sugar.
